SAN Hardware Components

Hosts

Hosts are the reason that the SAN exists. The entire goal of a SAN is to provide storage to hosts. Some low end SANs only support Intel-based servers running Windows NT,Windows 2000, or NetWare.  Better SANs can support hosts running WindowsNT, Windows 2000, NetWare, Linux, AIX, HP-UX, Solaris, and IRIX.

Host Bus Adapters

A host bus adapter (HBA) connects a server system to an external Fibre Channel storage system or to a Fibre Channel switch. In order to get the host operating system to recognize the HBA, a HBA driver must be installed.

Cables

Fibre Channel cables come in three basic varieties: copper, short wave fiber optic, and long wave fiber optic. Performance is the same for copper and optic cabling, however,greater distance can be achieved with optic cabling.

Connectors
Copper cables can use either a DB-9 connector or a high-speed serial data connector
(HSSDC). Optical connections use SC connectors.

Extenders such as an Optilinx 2000 can be used to increase the distances that a SAN canextend. In a SAN, extenders can be used to extend the distance between
two storage implementing remote a remote mirror to 60KM.

Switches, Hubs, and Directors
Switches, hubs, and directors are used to interconnect devices in a SAN fabric. Switches provide 100MB/s unblocked throughput on each port as opposed to hubs that provide 100MB/s shared bandwidth. Directors typically have the ability to connect Fibre Channel as well as other technologies such as ESCON.

Gigabit interface connectors (GBIC) are hot-swappable devices that provide switches with the flexibility of changing a ports connection type from optical to copper.
