SAP Sweetens Hana Deal With Free Sybase Database

Almost all the talk at last week's SAP Business Suite Powered By Hana announcement was about "reinventing enterprise systems." It's SAP's vision that companies will drop conventional databases from the likes of Oracle, IBM or Microsoft and switch to its Hana in-memory database in order to dramatically improve the performance of critical systems like ERP. But SAP has also quietly acknowledged, both at the event and in a follow-up interview, that its execs know that not everything will move to Hana right away.

The most obvious sign of this admission is a dual-database deal whereby SAP is including the Sybase ASE transactional database -- meaning it's a free add-on -- when customers license SAP Business Suite Powered by Hana. SAP executives explained the offer in a follow-up interview with InformationWeek last week.

SAP NEWSBYTE - SAP AG (NYSE: SAP) today announced two new No. 1 results on the SAP Sales and Distribution (SD) standard application benchmark for SAP Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE). SAP Sybase ASE recorded the top two-processor result running on the Cisco UCS B200 M3 server and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.3, together with enhancement package 5 for the SAP ERP 6.0 application1. It also achieved the No. 1 four-processor Linux result running on the Fujitsu PRIMERGY RX500 S7 server with SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP2 and enhancement package 5 for SAP ERP 6.02.

The result certified on the Cisco server achieved 6,530 SAP SD benchmark users and 35,680 SAPS. The result certified on the Fujitsu PRIMERGY server achieved 12,400 SAP SD benchmark users and 67,780 SAPS. These results achieved on the two-tier SAP SD standard application benchmark running on two- and four-processor Linux servers demonstrate linear scale from 16 to 32 cores and provide further evidence that SAP Sybase ASE, together with leading hardware vendors, is enabling customers to achieve unmatched performance gains for both 16- and 32-core systems.

"With SAP Sybase ASE running on Red Hat Enterprise Linux and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, customers can achieve exceptional price-performance for SAP Business Suite applications on standards-based platforms."

Results of the benchmark run on the Cisco UCS B200 M3 server are valid as of January 8, 2013, and results on the Fujitsu PRIMERGY RX500 S7 server are valid as of January 11, 2013. Details can be found at www.sap.com/benchmark.
